Renaissance, a model for the Ecole de Nancy?
Exhibition, musée de l'Ecole de Nancy
May 2013, 2nd - September 2013, 15th
You may have to come back to the very beginnings of the Ecole de Nancy to find traces of the influence of Renaissance Art. Emile Gallé and Louis Majorelle inherited and transmitted during their first years of activity the decorative traditions born in the mid 19thcentury, from a powerful come back to historic styles. Today, the visitor of the museum is welcomed with a masterpiece of the collection, The Rhine (1889), a table designed by Gallé, as a combination of a strong and typically Renaissance structure and a modern an innovative décor. Emile Gallé and Daum often draw their models from a Renaissance repertory of figures like Duke René II of Lorraine or Jacques Callot’s characters. But the Ecole de Nancy has gone beyond a simple stylish borrowing and showed a common state of mind when considering the role of art and the place of the artist in society, or reflecting on the technical progresses or a workshop production.
